I've added a new tool to my BBQ arsenal. A Thermapen. I have been lusting after one of these for about three years. This year I entered into Thermaworks Thanksgiving  drawing and won one. These thermometers are really great and take a reading in about three seconds.
The prize package.

The Thermapen is great for BBQing. The less you open your lid when cooking the better and when you do open the lid the less time it is open the better. The Thermapen takes a reading in about three seconds so you only need to open the lid for about 10 to know how your meat is doing. This translates into smaller temperature swings and allows your temperatures to stay more even for better cooking.  The thermapen can also be used for other cooking like making jellies, jams and candy.
Testing the turkey, not ready yet.
The thermapen is rated to test temperatures from -58-572°F and is accurate to +or- 1°. It is also splash proof so you don't have to worry if you get it a bit wet due to rain or spray from some other source. It is also very easy to use. You flip out the metal probe to turn the pen on, stick the probe into what ever you want to take the temperature of and in about three seconds you should have a reading. To turn it off you flip the probe back.

Each pen comes with a traceble calibration certificate to show that they are tested and rated to be accurate and a users guide to tell you how to care for and work your pen. The battery is good for 1500 hours of use.

The thermapen takes the guess work out of cooking and can really help to hit the right temperatures. If I hadn't won one I would have purchased one. It is a great tool to have, not only for BBQ but also for other cooking.

On the Gibbs Rib scale* I give it a full rack with a side of slaw. The thermapen is simple to use, accurate and small enough to store in a pocket. It helps you to hit the temperatures for rare, medium and well done every time. You get one of these and you can get rid of that fork with the thermometer in it that is as accurate as a blind pitcher.

*When I do reviews, books or otherwise, I rate the items with ribs (they are my favorite BBQ dish). A full rack is great and a single rib is poor. I will tend to stick to a full rack, half rack or one rib.

  1. I see you have a black Thermapen. Excellent choice. Black Thermapens have been proven time and time again to be the fastest, contrary to opinions offered up by others.
