My friends at Meyer's Elgin Sausage sent me some of their Smokehouse Rub to try a while back. I've tried it and used most of it so I figured I better review it like I promised too. I tried it on a couple different meats; pork, hamburger and briskets. Its flavor really shines on the beef.

When I first tried the rub I put it on pork and found it overpowered the pork chop. It was too salty. I was nervous to try it on other meats but the good people at Meyers recommended I try it on beef. The next time I made burgers i mixed it into the beef and was pleasantly surprised. I recently did two briskets and used the rub on them. They were the best briskets I've done to date.

The Rub
I always taste rub plain before I use it. I sprinkle a little in my hand so I can see it and then do a little lick taste to get the raw flavor. This rub is slightly saltier then I normally like but it plays well with the beef. There is a little hint of sweet in it along with pepper and paprika. It is a nice fine grind so it spreads easily when you shake the bottle.

The Meat
As I said I originally used this rub on pork chops and didn't like it too much. But when I put it on burgers I had a much better experience with it. I also used it when I made my Bacon Wrapped Fiesta Burger and it was great. The briskets I used it on were phenomenal and the au jus from them was mouth watering.

The Conclusion
This is a good rub. It works well on beef and would work well on a larger cut of pork like a butt but can over power a pork chop. On the Gibbs' Ribs* scale I give this rub a solid 3/4 rack. I would buy it to use on brisket, steak and other beef any day and would try it again on pork but sprinkled much lighter.

As grilling and BBQ season are gearing up to start I would highly recommend going over to Meyers online store and ordering some goodies for the season. You won't be disappointed.

*When I do reviews, books or otherwise, I rate the items with ribs (they are my favorite BBQ dish). A full rack is great and a single rib is poor. I will tend to stick to a full rack, half rack or one rib.

  1. Nice. Thank you for providing more information about Smokehouse rub. I frequently use Smokehouse rub, and I will almost always get them from a reputable manufacturer such as Belay & Bell. Because they are a major online provider of Smokehouse rub and offer high-quality items at a lower price than other sellers. If you want to buy Smokehouse rub, I recommend that Belay & Bell.
